Take the time to look good
Business First of Buffalo
First impressions are critical to your success in business. We all know the cliches, that you never get a second chance to make a first impression and that the first impression is the lasting one.
What you may not know is that 55 percent of how you are judged is based on your appearance, 7 percent on the words that you use and 35 percent on your tone of voice. Here are a few tips from business etiquette author Lydia Ramsey (lydia@lydiaramsey.com) to ensure that the first impression others have of you is your absolute best.
• Remember that you are always onstage. At any given moment you may encounter that sought-after client or potential employer. Always be prepared to look and sound your best.
• Know that people will look at your face and neck first. Good grooming is essential. Don't put off that haircut another week just to save money. It may end up costing you more.
• People will glance at your feet next. Make sure that your shoes are well maintained and appropriate. Poorly kept shoes may signal a lack of attention to detail on the job.
• Focus on the other person. Use the person's name immediately in conversation. This sends a message that you are interested and paying attention.
• Express some form of appreciation within the first few words. Say "thank you" to others for their time and effort in meeting with you or whatever is appropriate to recognize.
• Smile and make eye contact. You will make other people feel good about themselves and about you.
